FAQs, ACC & Fee Information

CAN YOU COME DIRECTLY WITH A NEW ACC CLAIM WITHOUT NEEDING TO SEE A GP?

Yes, physios are able to diagnose many soft tissue injuries with their clinical reasoning skills and can initiate the ACC claim.

IS MY PROBLEM ACC?

In order to qualify for ACC, firstly there needs to be an incident: an external force to the body, a fall impacting part of the body, a sudden onset injury from a forceful movement or lifting or shifting a load.

The injury cannot be the result of a pre-existing condition unless that condition was aggravated by the accident.

The claim must be made within 12 months of the event. If it is older than 1 year a request can be filed with ACC but an assessment will need to be done before lodgement of the request.

CAN I GET IMAGING FROM A PHYSIO?

Physios can order forms of imaging such as Ultrasound Scan and X-Ray. MRI is exclusive to Orthopaedic Specialists.

I often refer people for Ultrasound, but will leave X-Ray to the GP as it involves radiation exposure and if a fracture is suspected, the current will need multidisciplinary involvement.

WHAT DO I WEAR TO A PHYSIO SESSION?

It is advisable that you wear loose comfortable clothing. Sometimes it is necessary for the injured part to be exposed so a singlet/tank top or sports bra for a shoulder, loose shorts/track pants for hip and legs, loose t-shirt for spine injuries.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU DON’T TREAT?

Since the advent of specialist physios, those areas are best left to those people.

In Whanganui, there is a hand specialist team and so finger, hand and wrist injuries are seen by them.
